Hypotheses
- Number of animal food taboos and intensity of taboos will be associated with measures of animal food in the diet (3)Human Relations Area Files - A cross-cultural study of protein consumption: the role of cultural taboos i..., 1961 - 2 Variables
This study was designed to determine whether there is a significant correlation between the number (or intensity) of restrictions on consumption of animal protein and a low level of animal protein. Findings do not support a correlation.

This study examines socio-economic predictors of political complexity. Findings suggest that class stratification is the most significant predictor of political complexity.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Loss of food supplies due to unpredictable natural disasters will be associated with nomadic animal husbandry (99-100).Korotayev, Andrey V. - Unilocal residence and unilineal descent: a reconsideration, 2004 - 2 Variables
This study focuses on the development of unilineal descent, reviewing previous theories and testing additional factors to explain the relationship between unilineal descent and unilocal residence. Results suggest four key factors leading to a low association between these two variables: insufficient alternatives to unilocal residence rule, instability of communal composition, absence of sedentary settlement pattern, and small average community size. A model linking all variables from the paper is presented.

This article examines shamans and other types of magico-religious healers. Agriculture and political integration are suggested to influence the transformation of shamans into shaman/healers, healers, or possession-trance mediums.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - A community's mode of production will determine its level of political integration (448).Koch, Klaus-Friedrich - Political and psychological correlates of conflict management: a cross-cultu..., 1976 - 2 Variables
This study examines predictors of the type of conflict management used at the community level. Results suggest that level of political integration is associated with mode of conflict management.

This article examines shamans and other types of magico-religious healers. Agriculture and political integration are suggested to influence the transformation of shamans into shaman/healers, healers, or possession-trance mediums.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Societies that practice agriculture will be more technologically advanced, have greater population densities, operate in environments that are richer and more amenable to agriculture, and will be closer to the Fertile Crescent and/or another original hearth of agriculture (267).Baker, Matthew - A structural model of the transition to agriculture, 2008 - 5 Variables
This article presents a representative theoretical model of the transition to agriculture. Empirical results from a cross-cultural sample provide support for the model. Results suggest that agriculture is associated with population density, technological sophistication, environment, and proximity to agricultural hearths, such as the Fertile Crescent.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Alcohol will be positively associated with levels of political complexity, after considering the effect of agricultureHrnčíř, Václav - Did Alcohol Facilitate the Evolution of Complex Societies?, 2025 - 3 Variables
This study investigates the time-hardened question of whether alcohol had any role in the evolution of complex societies, aka the “drunk’ hypothesis. Although indigenous alcoholic beverages are found in about 50% of societies around the world largely excluding native North America and Oceania, low-alcohol fermented drinks have been known to aid in social cohesion, maintaining political ties (through feasting), and rituals. While it is clear alcohol is not a direct indicator of social complexity, when controlling for agriculture and other major factors, the relationship between the two is significant.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - Controlling for sustenance from hunting and fishing, the number of jurisdictional levels will be related to trance (270).Swanson, Guy E. - Trance and possession: studies of charismatic influence, 1978 - 3 Variables
This study examines correlates of trance and possession in pre-industrial societies. Results suggest that the presence of trance/possession is associated with subsistence, number of jurisdictional levels, and community decision-making.
Related Hypotheses Cite More By Author - The cultural differences in the extent to which physical punishment is employed in socialization is related to cultural differences in the extent to which conformity and self-reliance are differentially valued (132-133).Petersen, Larry R. - Social structure, socialization values, and disciplinary techniques: a cross..., 1982 - 6 Variables
This article focuses on the relationship between the use of physical punishment during child socialization and the amount of supervision that adults experience. The authors analyze data using a path analysis which suggests that the greater the valuation of conformity relative to self-reliance, the greater the use of physical punishment during child socialization. Precursors of conformity are also suggested.
